Why Obese?

OUR STORY

Most pickleball brands are built around the game.
Obese Singles was built around refusing to play it small.

The idea for Obese Singles™ started with one simple observation.

In pickleball, there’s a popular variation called skinny singles, where each player covers only half the court. It’s a great training game and a fun variation, but the name got me thinking.

If a half-width court is called skinny, what do you call the full-width version? Obese Singles.

It’s a tongue-in-cheek name that celebrates playing the entire court. No reduced sidelines. No shortcuts. Just you, your opponent, and every square foot of the court.

That idea grew into something bigger.

Obese Singles™ is launching as an apparel brand, but clothing is just the beginning. Our vision is to build a community around players who love the challenge of full-court singles and to expand into tournaments, events, and other Obese Singles products.

While pickleball has countless doubles events, there are relatively few opportunities dedicated to singles players, especially those who enjoy the physical and mental challenge of covering the entire court on their own.

Obese Singles celebrates that style of play. It’s for athletes who embrace endurance, movement, strategy, and the satisfaction of knowing that every point is earned across the full court.

Whether you’re wearing the apparel, competing in a future Obese Singles tournament, or simply choosing to play full-court singles, you’re helping build a community around one of the sport’s greatest challenges.

If It’s Not Obese, It’s Not Singles.

OUR FOUNDER

Ryan Stotland, the founder of Obese Singles, is an economist by training but a creative at heart. While working as a macroeconomic researcher, Ryan began writing songs about the global financial crisis, ultimately culminating in his album Recession Sessions, which was featured by NPR, Freakonomics, and CBC.

Once the creative bug took hold, Ryan went on to produce hundreds of songs, a book, a podcast, and now a clothing brand. Obese Singles is his way of combining his absurd sense of humour with his love of pickleball.

Ryan plans to grow Obese Singles alongside teammates and friends he has met through the pickleball community in Montreal.
